The Veroli Casket, 950-1000 at The Victoria & Albert Museum

200-400 AD. Some Roman portrait medallions were made as pendants, but most were set in to the base of bowls and dishes commemorating a social occasion. The discs were later broken out of the dishes to be re-used as grave markers.
