The Memorial for the Exhibition of 1851

The Memorial, designed by Joseph Durham, is made of Aberdeen and Cornish granite with electrotyped bronze female figures representing Europe, America, Asia and Africa.

The original plan was to crown it with a statue of Britannia, but following Prince Albert?s death in 1861 Queen Victoria arranged for a statue of her late husband to stand on top.
